Are you a keen amateur or semi professional musician wanting to be part of a larger music community? 

There are many opportunities locally, in and around Perth with many music ensembles and orchestras looking to boost their numbers. Some of which you won't even need to audition for!  

As well as expanding your social circle, in time you will realize that the benefits of ensemble music-making on your playing and musicianship skills are priceless. Indeed a lifelong learning process and in depth appreciation of music.

South Side Symphony Orchestra

  • A new and vibrant community orchestra established in Feb 2011. The current orchestra members represent a wide range of ages and musical abilities, from amateur to professional.
  • Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings in Melville, today the orchestra performs regular concerts throughout the year. 
  • The orchestra and their community aim to create a friendly atmosphere and are welcoming new members to join the family.

The Dorkestra 

  • An orchestra for amateur adults. It is designed for adult string players who began learning their instrument later in life, or who learned as children and wish to return to music. Intermediate standard of reading music. 
  • It is un-auditioned and very casual in nature.
  • They meet Thursdays 7.30-9.30pm in Fremantle.

The Awkwardstra 

  • Another orchestra for amateur adults wanting to return to playing an instrument or play a new instrument with others.
  • Mostly string players, beginner-intermediate standard, un-auditioned, and very welcoming of new player.
  • They meet Wednesdays 7.30-9pm at Victoria Park.

Western Australian Charity Orchestra 

  • WACO was founded to provide musicians with the opportunity to change lives through music. Since 2008, they have held eight concert seasons, featured the talents of over 1000 Western Australian musicians, and in the last performance alone, WACO raised over $19,000 for Guide Dogs WA. 
  • WACO features musicians from diverse backgrounds, including students, teachers, amateurs and professionals of all ages. Their mission to make great music and to make a difference. Entry to the ensembles is via screened auditions.
  • Rehearsals are held at Churchlands SHS on Mondays, 7:00-9:30pm during the year, and Mondays and Thursdays 7:00-9:30pm during our summer program. Applications to audition close on 7th October 2016.

Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra

  • MetSO was established in 1977 to promote and encourage interest in orchestral music and has attracted members from across the Perth metropolitan area. Since then, hundreds of dedicated amateur musicians have played with the orchestra. 
  • MetSO performs a wide variety of works ranging from major symphonies through to light classical pieces and popular themes. 
  • MetSO’s Artistic Director is Christopher Dragon who has continued in that role after moving to an appointment in 2016 as Associate Conductor with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in USA. Guest conductors have included Burhan Güner, Olli Cuneo, Bruce Herriman, Kevin Gillam, Alan Lourens, Chris Sears, Jessica Gethin and Raymond Yong.
  • MetSO rehearses on Monday nights from late January through to early December and performs four concerts a year. Rehearsals are held at the Mt Hawthorn Community Centre, cnr The Boulevarde and Scarborough Beach Road.
  • New players are welcome, particularly strings and brass.

 Fremantle Symphony Orchestra 

  • Fremantle Symphony Orchestra is a vibrant community orchestra that plays three to four concerts a year. The musical director is David Pye, and the orchestra works with guest conductors for most concerts. 
  • Some of the more memorable concerts in recent years include the Canning City Council World Arts Exchange concerts with the UWA Choral Society and a variety of other performers from Australia and overseas; the Verdi Requiem, also with the UWA Choral Society; and the Firebird Suite, conducted by Chris Dragon.

Churchlands Community Orchestra 

  • The orchestra was established mid 1980’s at the then Churchlands College of Advanced Education.
  • They exist for the ENJOYMENT of ORCHESTRAL PLAYING, with the usual expectations for orchestral ‘manners’ . No audition required.
  • The conductor/ concertmaster 2016, Mrs Sheila Barlow enjoys selecting a balance of Classical compositions within the orchestra's scope to play as well as Musical Theatre pieces; you'll get Beethoven + Rogers & Hammerstein+ Hawaii 5-O at the same concert!
  • Rehearsals take place on Monday evening 7.20 for 7.30, 2 hours with 5 min break midway at St Nicholas Church Hall, The Boulevarde, Floreat. Every month on one of the Mondays will be an extended interval of 20 minutes for a tea/cake/chat session for social interaction.

Amateur Chamber Music Players

  • A non-profit association that facilitates informal playing and singing for enjoyment by people of all ages, beginners to professionals.
  • Being a worldwide association today, ACMP has developed an online Worldwide Directory, with members from over 57 countries, that is constantly being updated with new members. This medium allows you to meet new musicians around you as well as while you are travelling overseas if you would like a session or two of music-making.

Hills Symphony Orchestra

  • The orchestra is mostly made up of dedicated amateurs from all walks of life with a passion for music. It is a community based orchestra with members ranging from amateurs to professional musicians, usually with an approximate playing level equivalent to AMEB Grade 4 or higher. 
  • String players are always especially welcome.
  • Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7.30 pm to 10 pm, at Midland Junction Arts Centre, 276 Great Eastern Hwy, 6056 Midland

Perth Scottish Fiddlers 

  • The Perth Scottish Fiddlers is a group of musicians who come together to play the rich and extensive violin and dance repertoire of Scotland. They play a range of music, from beautiful airs and elegant strathspeys to fast and furious reels and jigs. The group’s music repertoire is arranged by the Musical Director and other members of the group including some original tunes, adding an Australian flavour! 
  • Perth Scottish Fiddlers is open to fiddlers and cellists who have some experience on their instrument.
